Housebreaking Your New Puppy in 5 Steps

Updated: Jun 19

Accidents happen…. but you can train your goldendoodle to use the appropriate area in a short time due to our preparation and her intelligence and desire to please.

A few easy steps will make potty training a breeze:

#1 Keep a chart of each time your puppy relieves herself. This will help you learn her natural body rhythms and when she needs to go out.

#2 Our puppies are trained to go in a tray filled with alfalfa pellets. Alfalfa pellets smell like grass, absorbs the mess and can be placed outside to establish a “potty area.”

#3 Be sure to take your puppy outside through the SAME door each time. This will help her know where to go as she learns to signal to you her need to go out. Some dogs respond well to a hanging bell that when she taps it, helps you hear her if she goes to the door.

#4 Puppies learn best with a disciplined routine.Take her outside EVERYTIME she wakes up. This is easier to accomplish if you are crate training.

Following is the routine we use for one week to have our puppies completely trained:

·       Our goldendoodle is carried outside immediately after waking up in the crate. (We carry her because otherwise she may piddle because she can’t hold it)

·       Once she relieves herself outside, she is given lots of praise and a treat.

·       She then plays for about 30 minutes and then back into the crate. The crate should only be large enough for her to stand up and turn around. Dogs will not go to the bathroom in the area they sleep.

·       She is in the crate for an hour to an hour and a half. We then repeat the process immediately taking her outside as soon as she is released from the crate.

#5 Your new puppy will not be able to make it through the night without having to relieve herself. During the night, we do not allow a play time, but put her right back in the crate so she understands at night we all sleep. LOL
